Find out how to provide safe learning spaces for SEN & EHCP pupils

Why every school needs a breakout room for SEN pupils

Approximately one in 57 children in the UK is on the autism spectrum, that is one child for every two average-sized classrooms who would benefit from breakout rooms. This figure does not account for pupils with other neurodevelopmental conditions, such as ADHD or sensory processing disorder, further reinforcing the widespread need for appropriate breakout spaces.

sen-ready spaces

Buildings that are adaptable and easily changeable are ideal for accommodating the regulations required by Breakout rooms. These rooms benefit from meeting clear standards, such as;

– Corridors are 2.2m wide

– For ambulant pupils, 12m² floor space is required.

– For non-ambulant pupils, 15m² is needed.

Not only is this important for the pupils, but the teachers and carers also require Classrooms with open spaces to maintain clear sightlines of the pupils. Additionally, they need to be accessible to facilitate the movement of the pupils as easily as possible.

What we offer

Modular buildings and Jackleg cabins (a type of portable building with adjustable support legs) are perfect for SEN breakout rooms. Due to their versatility, adaptability and customisation options, you can shape them to fit your exact specifications. Not only that, they also have the added benefit of being quick to create and install compared to traditional building methods. For instance, the modular buildings would be fitted with the necessary power points, lighting fixtures, HVAC systems and would also be linked up to your electrical and plumbing network. Our Jackleg Cabins range from 14.8m² to 44.5m² in floor space.

These units are perfect for adapting to spaces that accommodate different needs. Below are a few options that you may require, which satisfy the space guidelines.

 All that remains is for you to decorate the inside however you would like; you can turn it into a classroom, dining area, art room or sensory space.

funding opportunities

As of 2025, the UK government has allocated £740 million across England for local authorities to use on projects such as the creation of new specialist places, especially for children with Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs) or other complex SEN needs, or to improve existing mainstream or specialist facilities.

This is an excellent opportunity for schools. To apply, you will need to contact your local authority directly, as they are the organisation that prioritises which projects receive funding.

Let us help you

Speak to our Modular or Sales team on 01449 782123 for a no-obligation quote you can share with your local authority.

Funding is available now – check with your local authority to find out if they are planning any projects using the funds. Share your proposal and explain why a breakout room would benefit your pupils. Support it with evidence. Include things like the number of pupils with EHCPs, incidents, or challenges that demonstrate the need for a breakout space, and explain how it aligns with your school’s SEN strategy.
