Durable shipping containers make ideal housing for latest radar technology

Sector
Defence & MOD

Converted shipping containers were chosen as a practical solution to house state-of-the-art radar technology because they are durable, transportable and can be stacked and mounted wherever required.

These were the reasons why Aveillant, now a Thales Group company which employs 68,000 people globally, chose Portable Space to supply converted shipping containers for its unique ground-breaking Holographic Radar which has delivered a major step-change in the industry with its ability to illuminate the entire sky and record everything in view, all the time.

Recent projects have included one in Monaco, two for Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and others throughout the UK.

Bob Wade, Operations Director at Aveillant, said: “Portable Space supplied us with prototype units before we commissioned a fully-fitted office and life support module for the radar. Converted shipping containers are perfect for being hard-wearing and also vandal-proof which is what we need for our unique technology.

“Dealing with Portable Space was a breath of fresh air. They immediately understood what we needed and delivered it at a competitive price too. I can honestly say that we have not had a single quality issue and the customer service has been excellent.”

Aveillant was created to take to market ground-breaking Holographic Radar technology originally developed by Cambridge Consultants. It is used to solve the problem wind turbines can cause to Air Traffic Control radar but also for the Counter Unmanned Arial Vehicle (C-UAV) drone market, maritime and coastal surveillance plus border protection.
