Case Study: STEPPING STONES COFFEE

Shipping container conversion provides visitors with riverside refreshments

Sector
Café, Retail & Museums

Portable Space shipping container café conversion helps Stepping Stones Coffee to provide a unique space for visitors to enjoy food and drink on the shores of the River Clyde in Scotland.

Their project to set up a takeaway coffee shop started back in October 2023, it went through many planning hurdles. When they finally received planning permission, they arranged to come down to visit our HQ and were impressed with everything from our teams to the manufacturing of units. This visit resulted in them choosing us for their project. The idea for this project was to have an internal area for food preparation and an area for the public to enter and come to the serving counter located at Inverkip on the shores of the River Clyde, Scotland.

THE CONVERSION PROCESS.

The unit started life as a 40ft High Cube One Trip shipping container, which was modified and reduced to 30ft in length to suit the project’s requirements. The original cargo doors were removed, and double uPVC-framed French doors were installed at one end of the container to provide the main entrance.

To maximise natural light, full-height uPVC windows were fitted along one side of the unit, while high-level uPVC-framed windows were installed on the opposite side. For added security, all windows and doors were fitted with external roller shutter doors.

Internally, we carried out a complete fit-out of the food preparation area, including the installation of cupboards, work surfaces, sinks, and an extractor hood. The walls and ceiling were fully insulated and finished with a food-safe PVC lining, creating a hygienic environment suitable for food preparation.

The floor was raised and insulated before being finished with an appropriate commercial-grade vinyl flooring. To separate the food preparation area from the customer-facing space, we installed a serving counter with a lift-up access hatch. Above this, a plinth was incorporated to allow for the installation of display screens, providing a practical and professional serving area.

TESTIMONIAL.

Ian and Jack were very helpful during the whole process even with many changes and requotes. The final unit was exactly as we had imagined it and now that we have finally opened on August 26th is performing very well. If I were building another unit I would definitely come back to Portable Space again!

CONCLUSION.

We successfully delivered the unit to Scotland and are pleased to have been a stepping stone in the journey of Stepping Stones Coffee!
