Archaeologists and students working just south of Cambridge have uncovered a rare 9th-century burial site, marking the first major discovery of human remains at Wandlebury County Park in nearly 50 years.
New remains discovered at Wandlebury
A dig at Wandlebury County Park, led by Cambridge University archaeologists and undergraduate students, has revealed what is believed to be the aftermath of a 9th-century battle or execution.
These newly uncovered remains are the first human discoveries at the site since 1976, when a fallen tree exposed a cluster of skeletons. This recent find emerged during a university training excavation, which has since been featured on the BBC’s Digging for Britain.
Archaeological surge in Suffolk
Suffolk is experiencing its own wave of archaeological breakthroughs, largely driven by work associated with the Sizewell C infrastructure project. Oxford Cotswold Archaeology currently operates more than 20 active sites with around 200 archaeologists investigating Anglo-Saxon history across the county.
The teams are uncovering early medieval settlement patterns, burial mounds, and evidence of high-status individuals who lived in the region during the 7th century.
High-status Anglo-Saxon grave among notable finds
Among the most remarkable discoveries so far is a high-status grave containing the remains of two Anglo-Saxons, buried alongside a fully harnessed horse, weapons, and a range of personal possessions.
Our local involvement in regional excavations
The nationwide interest generated by these discoveries has drawn archaeologists from across the UK. Large-scale excavations demand more than field expertise; they require secure storage for delicate artefacts, dry welfare facilities for teams working in all weather, and reliable office space to manage documentation and research.
At sites like those managed by Oxford Cotswold Archaeology, our modular welfare units and secure containers provide robust, weatherproof space that can be delivered quickly, positioned with minimal ground disruption and removed just as efficiently once the project is complete. It means archaeological teams can focus on preserving history, knowing their equipment, finds, and people are properly supported on site.
