Portable Space Welcomes New Apprentice

Posted: 6th February 2024 | By Kirsty Oliver

Multi-Award-Winning business Portable Space announces Amy Underwood as their first ever Apprentice.

Joining the team in April 2023, Amy has been making her mark with fresh ideas and infectious energy.  We spoke with Amy to hear her thoughts on the Apprenticeship so far…

What apprenticeship are you currently pursuing?

I am currently midway through completing my apprenticeship in Level 3 Business Administration through West Suffolk College whilst working here at Portable Space.

How are you supported during your apprenticeship programme?

I am supported by my programme tutors at West Suffolk college both digitally and through in person visits. Within Portable Space I have my Line Manager Melissa and Commercial Manager Lauren who are available for support and guidance, as well as the friendly team who I work with on a day-to-day basis.

Which departments within the company have you worked for?

When I joined Portable Space in April, I began my journey in the Hire department learning about the units we have on our hire fleet and developing communication with customers. I am currently working within the Sales department where I have learnt the specific processes such as selling products and building rapport with clients.

What does your apprenticeship entail?

My apprenticeship in Business Administration has so far equipped me with being multiskilled in IT packages and given me confidence in producing and presenting accurate records in various ways. One of the main areas I have begun to develop a further understanding for is the power of communication and determining the right approach dependent on the situation.

Alongside completing my daily duties for Portable Space, I am tasked by the college, with completing a set amount of ‘Off-the-Job’ hours which must total 20% of my time. This includes independent studying, internal training, and shadowing colleagues. ‘Shadowing’ work provides vital exposure to a multitude of areas of the business. I recently spent time in our Accounts department learning about all the different financial processes and how they are performed.

Is there a specific department or area in the company that you are most excited about working in?

I am looking forward to working more in Procurement to gain a better understanding of the journey of our products and the processes involved.

What are the best parts about being an apprentice?

I was originally drawn towards the Business Administrator Apprenticeship due to the versatility of the learning involved and the diversity of future job opportunities. It’s great being able to learn from so many different people across all departments of the organisation. Being able to complete a work-based qualification whilst learning transferrable skills in a hands-on environment will give me a great head start in my career.

What has been your highlight at Portable Space so far?

A highlight whilst working at Portable Space so far is definitely helping customers visions become a reality through both the hire and selling of products.

What are your hopes and aspirations for the future?

I’m hoping to continue working at Portable Space after my apprenticeship is completed, and aspiring to be a part of the Leadership Management team one day!
