Nearby Felsham and Gedding Playing Field was gifted to the two villages in 1976. Administered by the Felsham and Gedding Playing Field charity, this non-profit-making organisation exists to benefit the people of these two Suffolk parishes.
The Playing Field charity’s trustees are all local residents who work hard to raise funds for maintenance and improvements. One such trustee is our very own senior hire controller Jamie Corney.
The trustees, like Jamie, gift their valuable time and encourage use of the playing field by organising events throughout the year. The trustees assisted three other Felsham charities with last weekend’s long Bank Holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee which provided a wonderful occasion to get the local community together. From Thursday through to Sunday, locals had plenty of opportunity to celebrate this monumental milestone with friends and family by attending a host of fun fundraising events and activities. From bands and beacon-lighting to a street fair and fun day, organisers pulled out all the stops. The weekend of celebrations came to a close with a delicious Jubilee Big Lunch, served at the village hall.
While the Jubilee weekend was a one-off, there are plenty of regular events that take place throughout the year. The annual summer fete and bonfire night extravaganza are just a couple of fundraising fixtures in the charity’s calendar. Relying entirely on donations and the goodwill of local people, every penny that the playing field charity makes is put back into the community for the benefit of its residents.
The Parish Council kindly pays for grass cutting. However, a recent initiative has seen half of the field relinquished to rewilding. During the summer months, this section is left alone and an array of wildflowers have begun to take root, helping to widen the biodiversity and environmental value of the playing field. Paths are cut through the field, enabling locals to wander through this new habitat and appreciate all that nature has to offer. A future plan is to encourage local children to plant wildflowers throughout the field, thereby highlighting the global importance of rewilding projects. The hard-working trustees also organise volunteer work parties to carry out ad hoc maintenance to the boundary hedges, as well as participate in planting over 200 trees and have 200 more planned.
Alongside environmental initiatives, the charity also focuses on maintaining the playing field as a facility for all. The charity funded and maintains the children’s play equipment and the youth shelter. The former providing a popular place to play and the latter, an important spot to meet and socialise with friends. Additionally, the highly popular basketball court is currently in the planning stages of an important upgrade to create a larger area with more modern facilities.
When the charity is gifted kind donations and invaluable support from local businesses, vital resources can be reallocated to other initiatives. Recently, the charity found itself in need of an alternative storage solution for equipment and Portable Space was proud to sponsor their new storage facility. Equipment can now be stored safely and securely and every penny saved will be put back into upgrading existing facilities and supporting upcoming projects that benefit the people of Felsham and Gedding.
Portable Space is delighted to support this worthy cause for the local community.
