In-house skills provide all the ingredients for construction site canteen

Successful coordination of a wide range of in-house skills has resulted in Portable Space creating a new canteen for one of its regular customers, a major UK housebuilder.

Required for one of its current developments at Fresh Wharf in Barking, Essex, the canteen is now installed on-site, alongside a range of other temporary accommodation cabins including project offices, toilets, showers and drying facilities.

The canteen is a steel modular building which is robust and secure, ideal for strong working environments such as construction. The flexible system – with each module 3m wide – enabled the units to be joined side-by-side. The canteen’s attractive flat-sided external finish was painted in the company’s corporate colour.

Inside, the flexible space was fitted out with fixed chairs and tables. A separately-designed and constructed link-way enabled the additional canteen facility to be joined to the existing cabin set-up.

Portable Space’s Appointed Person prepared a comprehensive set of RAMs including Full Lifting Plan to enable a successful installation using haulage and cranes from both Portable Space and a sub-contractor.

Danny Napier, Modular Buildings Project Manager said: “This was a perfect example of harnessing all our in-house skills and close liaison between all departments to create and install a canteen, together with additional anti-vandal cabins, that met all our customer’s requirements. From drawings to delivery, we coordinated each stage and department, including electrics, painting and fitting out, so that it arrived on site, on-time and with minimal disruption to our client’s already busy programme.”
